Figured I should do a doc about the German versions of these films, since people keep asking about them.


GODZILLA

- Theatrical version, released by Atrium / Lehmacher Film in Germany and Austria in August 1956. Based on the Japanese cut, but shortened by about 12 minutes.

- TV version (?). Retains cuts, but has a different opening title sequence.


GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN

- Theatrical version, released by Donau Film in February 1958 with the title "Godzilla kehrt zurück" ("Godzilla returns"). Based on the Japanese cut, but about a minute shorter.

Thought to be lost for decades, but rediscovered a few years ago and released on DVD by Splendid in 2009.

- Marketing Film version, released on DVD in 2004 with a newly commissioned dub.


RODAN

- Original theatrical version released by RKO in September 1958 in Germany and Austria. Based on the US version, no cuts. Never released on home video.

- Theatrical re-release version by RCS, unknown release date. Used a print of the Japanese version, but retains cuts. Apparently a few minutes shorter than the US cut. Released under the title "Die fliegenden Monster von Osaka" ("The flying monsters from Osaka"). 


THE MYSTERIANS

- Theatrical version released in February 1960 by RKO / Rank Organisation in Germany and Austria under the title "Weltraum-Bestien" (literally "Space beasts"). Based on the US version,

no cuts.

- 1963 theatrical re-release by Mercator-Filmverleih, titled "Phantom 7000".

- Released on DVD by Shock DVD Entertainment in 2013. First official home video release.

H-MAN

- Theatrical version released in May 1959 by Columbia Pictures. Based on the US version, no cuts. Never released on home video.

Released under the title "Das Grauen schleicht durch Tokio" ("Horror creeps through Tokyo").
- TV version, US print with video generated German title card.

VARAN
- Released on DVD by 8-Films in 2011 under the title "Varan - Das Monster aus der Urzeit" ("Varan - The monster from prehistory"). Based on the Japanese version.


BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE
- Theatrical version by Columbia Pictures, released in November 1960 with the title "Krieg im Weltenraum" ("War in Outer Space"). Based on the US version, no cuts. Re-released by Columbia in July 1966. Never released on home video.

THE LAST WAR
- 1973 theatrical version released by Film-Allianz, titled "Todesstrahlen aus dem Weltall" ("Death Rays from Outer Space"). Based on the US version, no cuts known.

MOTHRA
- First broadcast on the TV channel Kabel 1 in 1994 under the title "Mothra bedroht die Welt" ("Mothra threatens the world"). Never released on home video.

KING KONG VS. GODZILLA
- Original theatrical version, released by Avis / Appolo in August 1974 with the title "Die Rückkehr des King Kong" ("The Return of King Kong"). Based on the US version, but edited by about 8 minutes (PAL).
First released on DVD by Anolis in 2013.
- TV version with US opening title sequence.

GORATH
- Theatrical version released in July 1975 by Apollo / CH / Peiper with the title "Ufos zerstören die Erde" ("UFOs destroy the Earth"). Most likely based on the shorter version of Brenco Pictures' US cut. No known cuts.
- TV version (?) with video generated title card released on home video.

ATRAGON
- Theatrical version titled "U 2000 - Tauchfahrt des Grauens" ("U 2000 - Diving trip of Horror") released by Constantin Film in November 1965. Based on Toho's international version, but shortened by about 7 minutes (PAL). The Gotengo is called "U 2000" in this version.

MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA
- Theatrical version released by Gloria Film in April 1974, under the title "Godzilla und die Urweltraupen" ("Godzilla and the caterpillars"). Based on the US version, no cuts.
- 2004 Marketing Film DVD release. Longest version worldwide, combining the Japanese version with the Frontier Missile scene found in the US version.

DOGORA
- Theatrical version released by Ceres in September 1966, titled "X 3000 - Fantome gegen Gangster" ("X 3000 - Phantoms versus gangsters"). Based on Toho's international version. Never released on home video.

GHIDRAH, THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER
- Released on DVD by 8-Films in 2011 under the title "Frankensteins Monster im Kampf gegen Ghidorah" ("Frankenstein's monsters fighting against Ghidorah"). Based on the Japanese version.
